Hey I know it’s been a minute since I’ve been on here so let me catch you up:
As you know I started experimenting with marketing my book and I’ve found a few things that don’t work, one that partially works and one or two things that do work. First, what doesn’t work is trying to post on TikTok and YouTube. Although I’ve had tons of success on these platforms for my wig reviews the same is not true for book sales. It could be that I haven’t found my audience yet and I must admit I wasn’t exactly strategic – building an audience first and then posting – so I will be working on the audience part and will get back to you.
The thing that partially worked was Meta. I bought ads for about three weeks at $15-20 a day and I did get sales and lots of impressions BUT the cost did not outweigh sales. It appears to be a black hole that your money falls into with no guarantee of a return. So I intend to use ads strategically from now on – only for promoting a new book for a few weeks.
The two things that do work are ebook blasts to librarians and school visits. I did an awareness campaign through IBPA (independent Book Publishers Association) and got over 100 requests for more info about my book. So I am following up on those. I am also creating a program for school visits that will at least pay me for my time. Lastly, I am reluctantly putting my books on IngramSpark for a wider distribution. I say reluctantly because I am not looking forward to lots of returns; I’ve had my own horror story with this company back in 2009 so I am being strategic: just doing ebooks first and see how that goes, then one or two paperbacks or hardbacks.
So there you have it. Marketing is still a pain for me but at least I tried and am finding a few avenues I can use that won’t break the bank. Tell me what you’re doing to market your books.
